Health Care While Abroad

Becoming sick or needing medical care while abroad can be very stressful for study abroad participants.  Kirkwood has structured policies carefully in order to reduce the stress as much as possible.  Kirkwood purchases Lewermark study abroad insurance for every participant to ensure that the best possible care will be received in country.

Kirkwood’s faculty leaders will have a list of local health care providers in their emergency packet.  In addition, Kirkwood’s health insurance provider provides access to a 24/7 nurse line where faculty leaders and/or students can call with questions about local providers, English-language care, etc.

By signing the Study Abroad Contract, study abroad participants have authorized Kirkwood or its agents to release medical information provided to health care providers and to secure medical treatment in the event of an emergency.  Students also accept financial responsibility for any treatment.
